As I look out of my window today I see what might be considered ‘unseasonal’ weather, for it is May and there is sleet falling from the sky. As I continue to write, the sun begins to shine but the temperature is still colder than I would like, or might expect.
We are familiar with seasons, even the way that they don’t necessarily stick to our expectations; they vary from country to country in their severity and characteristics; but wherever we are, seasons come and seasons go.
God created and gifted us with seasons. Scripture speaks of him appointing seasons, giving the task of marking them to the moon or the coming of the harvest. They are part of the way life is, the way life has to be – if the tree does not blossom it will not bear fruit; if the seed does not fall to the ground, there to be buried and forgotten, the new plant will never be born. And as with so much of the world around us, in the shape and pattern of the seasons he created, God speaks.
Take some time to ponder the merits and challenges of each season as seen in the natural world…
…the trees of winter look empty and bereft, the ground is depleted of flowers and signs of life or growth, but what is happening underneath the soil? How is a bulb made ready to flower when the time comes?
…consider spring which appears to carry so much life and vibrance, so much joy and expectation, yet the energy needed to produce such a colourful show must come from somewhere and may not be easily sustained but perhaps merely enjoyed and savoured.
You might find it helpful to Google a picture of each season to prompt your thinking.
When you are ready, move on to ask ‘if I look into the window of my heart today, which season best describes where I am?’ Do I feel the anticipation and expectation of spring; the seeming barrenness and cold empty waiting of winter; the transition of letting go that might be autumn?
Now take time to consider how you feel about the season you are in. Was it your choice to be here? Where would you rather be and can you identify why?
Revisit the characteristics of the physical seasons you have noted, how are these reflected in where you seem to find yourself. What are the challenges you face in this season and what are its nourishing features?
Talk with God about your responses. Maybe even write him a letter to explain your struggles and joys. Do not rush away from this moment, sit with your thoughts and discoveries, for this to is a time and place within the season.
