There is so much that can and has been said about God. The ways in which God’s work and presence are experienced in the Bible and in your life. Take a few moments to list some of God’s attributes that come to mind. You might begin with:
- Faithful
- Refuge
- All Knowing
- Safe place
- Just
- Love and loving
- Other
Your list may be long or short, that’s not the point, just list what comes to mind. Now take some time to sit with your list. Ponder on what you’ve written.
Ask yourself the question, which of these seem to stand out for me today? Which seem to resonate with me right now? This of course does not mean that the others are not true or do not matter, while valid they don’t attract your attention today. Can you identify three which you are drawn to? – it might be four, it might be two, the number isn’t important, but a few!
Now, set aside some time to relate these attributes to your own story. For example, if you have chosen ‘faithful’ – when did you experience God as faithful? What events or moments in your life and history represent to you the faithfulness of God? What did faithfulness look like in that moment? Be as specific as you can, be as prolific as you can. When you are ready and without rushing, consider how what you have written about these elements of who God is will affect the way that you feel about your life today, and as you look ahead to the future, remembering that God never changes.
As you draw your time to a close you might want to spend some time in thanks for who God is.
